Show Don’t Tell Part 1: Scenes Vs. Narrative Summary Recap

Narrative Summary:  A long passage of description during which no action or dialogue takes places in real time.

Scene:  Action or dialogue sequence as seen in real time
In the examples from the previous post, we learn a great deal more about the relationship between Johnny and Dave.  We learn that Johnny is much younger than his brother, Dave, and that Dave is studious and industrious.  We also get a hint that Dave may be a high school, or college student.  Furthermore, we also begin to realize that Johnny loves his older brother and, despite his initial feeling of resentment, he enjoys being around him.  In short, reveal your characters and your story through scenes, not narrative summaries as the scenes will reveal more about your character and make them seem more real.
